Sex assigned at birth

The term "sex assigned at birth" refers to the sex that is assigned to a person at birth based on their external genitalia. This is typically done by a doctor or midwife shortly after birth. In most cases, the sex assigned at birth is the same as the person's gender identity. However, this is not always the case. Some people are born with intersex traits, which means that they have a combination of male and female genitalia. Others may identify as transgender, which means that they do not identify with the sex that they were assigned at birth.

• Biological factors: The sex assigned at birth is typically based on a person's chromosomes, gonads, and external genitalia. However, there are some cases where a person's sex assigned at birth does not match their genetic or hormonal makeup. This can be due to a variety of factors, such as intersex conditions or congenital anomalies.
• Social factors: The sex assigned at birth can also be influenced by social factors, such as cultural norms and expectations. In some cultures, there is a strong emphasis on binary gender roles, and people who do not fit into these roles may be marginalized or discriminated against.
• Legal factors: The sex assigned at birth is often used to determine a person's legal rights and status. For example, in many countries, the sex assigned at birth is used to determine a person's gender on their birth certificate and other legal documents.
• Personal factors: Ultimately, the sex assigned at birth is just one factor that can influence a person's gender identity. Some people may identify with the sex that they were assigned at birth, while others may identify as transgender or non-binary. Gender identity

Gender identity refers to a person's internal sense of being male, female, or non-binary. It is distinct from sex assigned at birth, which is based on a person's external genitalia. Gender identity is a complex and multifaceted construct that is influenced by a variety of factors, including biology, culture, and personal experience.

• Facet 1: Biological factors

Some people believe that gender identity is determined by biological factors, such as chromosomes, hormones, and brain structure. However, there is no scientific consensus on this issue, and there is evidence to suggest that gender identity is more complex than simply a product of biology.

• Facet 2: Cultural factors

Culture plays a significant role in shaping gender identity. In some cultures, there is a strong emphasis on binary gender roles, and people who do not fit into these roles may be marginalized or discriminated against. In other cultures, there is a greater acceptance of gender diversity, and people are more free to express their gender identity in a variety of ways.

• Facet 3: Personal experience

Personal experience also plays a role in shaping gender identity. People who have experienced gender dysphoria, or a sense of discomfort with their sex assigned at birth, may come to identify as transgender or non-binary. Others may come to identify as transgender or non-binary after exploring their gender identity in a safe and supportive environment.

• Facet 4: Social factors

Social factors, such as family, friends, and peers, can also influence gender identity.
