Safe and sound

The connection between "safe and sound" and "member-owned" is that a credit union's safety and soundness is largely dependent on its member-ownership structure. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members, which means that they are not beholden to shareholders or outside investors. This allows credit unions to focus on the needs of their members, rather than on maximizing profits.

Credit unions are also required to maintain certain capital reserves, which act as a buffer against financial losses. This helps to ensure that credit unions are able to weather economic downturns and other financial challenges.

As a result of their member-owned structure and strong capital reserves, credit unions are generally considered to be safe and sound financial institutions. This is reflected in the fact that credit unions have consistently outperformed banks in terms of safety and soundness metrics. For example, during the 2008 financial crisis, credit unions experienced far fewer failures than banks.

The safety and soundness of credit unions is important for consumers because it means that their deposits are secure and that they can access their funds when they need them. It also means that credit unions are able to provide loans and other financial services to their members, even during difficult economic times.
